Defending champion Wang knocked out in elimination round

Defending Champion Wang Yanhong of China was among the top archers to be knocked out in the Individual 1-16 elimination round at the Olympic Green Archery Field on Wednesday, September 10.

In Men's Individual Recurve W1/W2, pre-competition favorite Oscar de Pellegrin of Italy easily beat Wolfe Russell of the United States, 107-76, in the Individual 1-16 elimination round. Pellegrin dominated the match in all four ends, outclassing the American archer.

Turkey's Ozgur Ozen beat his higher ranked opponent Manuel Candelaof Spain, 96-87, to book his berth in the next round, where he will face top seed Taras Chopyk Ukraine.

Japan's Yoshida Nobuji of Japan beat Mario Oehme of Germany 89-79 to make it through to the next round.

In other results Kevin Stone if the United States beat Amit Dror of Israel, 92-88 and Marco Vitale of Italy beat China's Chen Weying 104-99.

In Men's Individual Recurve Standing, defending Paralympic Champion Imrich Lyocsa of Slovakia beat Ukraine's Serhiy Atamanenko 95-73. Lyocsa dominated the match from the start, outplaying his opponent with a strong performance.

The match between An Tae-sung of the Republic of Korea and China's Zhu Weiliang went down to the wire with both archers finishing with scores of 95. The match was finally settled in a shootout that An won, 8-7.

In other matches Athens 2004 Paralympic silver medalist Tomasz Lezanski of Poland beat Antonio Sanchez of Spain, 97-88, and Miguel Juan Zarzuela of El Salvador beat his opponent from Greece, Romaios Roumeliotis, 97-90

In a nail biting encounter in Men's Individual Compound Open, Eric Bennett of the US team beat the Republic of Korea's Kweon Hyun-ju, in a shoot out in the 1-16 elimination round of the Men's Individual Compound - Open category.

After four rounds both archers were tied at 106 points.

Italy's Alberto Simonelli of Italy beat Anders Gronberg of Sweden, 112-107, in what was a closely fought contest.

In the other matches, Ireland's Henry Sean Martin of the Islamic Republic of Iran beat Michael Arenz of Germany 108-104.

In probably the biggest upset of the day, the defending Paralympic Champion of Women's Individual Recurve Standing, Wang Yanhong of China, was beaten by Lindsey Carmichael of USA 89-82.

Carmichael led the defending champion from the start and sealed what seemed to be an easy victory with eight points with her final arrow.

China's Yan Huilian of China beat Poland's Alicja Bukanska of Poland 98-96 and Britain's Kay Lucas beat Katharina Schett of Germany 85-70, in what turned out to be a one-sided clash.

In Women's Individual Recurve W1/W2 category, Kathleen Smith Critchlow of Great Britain beat Ukraine's Larysa Mikhnyeva of Ukraine 83-70, in what was also a one sided encounter.

In some other matches, Japan's Aya Nakanishi of Japan beat Hanife Ozturk of Turkey, 82-78 and Maria Droste of Germany beat Miroslava Cerna of the Czech Republic, 89-87 in a squeaker.

In the 1-8 elimination round of Men's Individual Compound W1, the republic of Korea's An Seong-pyo won a closely fought contest against Czech Republic's Zdenek Sebek, 104-100. An went on to win despite a brilliant fourth end performance from Sebek who scored two ten pointers.

Canada's Norbert Murphy of Canada easily beat Chuck Lear of the United States 98-75 to proceed to the next round.

In still other matches, Luca Fabio Azzolini of Italy beat Olivier Hatem of France 107-101 and Robert Lehner of Switzerland beat Jean-Pierre Antonios of Finland 94-89.
