Brazil beats Great Britain, moves closer to final
Adjust font size:

Brazil had no problems in defeating Great Britain 5-0 on Saturday in a preliminary match of the Beijing Paralympic Football 5-a-Side tournament.

It only took seven seconds for Brazil to go ahead. Joao Batista Silva's not-so-powerful shot went in between British goalkeeper Jonathan Pugh's legs.

Mizael Oliveira made it 2-0 from close range in the 12th minute, before British captain Ajmal Maqsood Ahmed turned the ball into his own goal after Pugh saved the initial shot.

Ricardo Alves scored his first goal in the tournament as Brazil finished the half with a 4-0 advantage, and Alves then scored Brazil's fifth goal within one minute of the restart.

Great Britain had opportunities, but David Clarke could only hit the post and Jon Gribbin shot straight at substitute goalkeeper Andreonni Farias Rego.

Brazil will now face China and it needs only one point to qualify for the gold medal match. Great Britain will play against Argentina. Both matches will be played on Monday.
