Wheelchair Rugby Day 4 Preview: Team USA favored to advance to gold medal match

The United States enters the semifinals against Great Britain favored to advance to the gold medal match as Australia fights Canada at the USTB Gymnasium on Monday, September 14. Also on Sunday, New Zealand, Japan, Germany and China will start their playoffs for fifth place.

United States vs. Great Britain (Semifinal)

United States remains unbeaten after three matches against China, Japan and Canada to place first in group A.

Team USA is the best in four of the statistical categories, including goals for (48.7 per game), steals (7.7 per game), turnovers (only 3.3 per game) and blocks (13 per game).

Will Groulx sits fifth in the tournament scoring, with an average of 11.7 goals per game.

Great Britain lost to Australia after narrowly defeating New Zealand (39-38) and Germany (39-35).

Troye Colliins is the second top scorer of the tournament, averaging 17.3 goals per game, while Alan Ash of Great Britain is sixth with 11.3 per game.

The United States and Great Britain played in the semifinals of the 2008 Canada Cup, with a 36-31 victory for the North Americans.

Australia vs. Canada (Semifinal)

Australia won all its group B matches against Germany, New Zealand and Great Britain.

Ryley Batt is the tournament's top scorer, averaging 24.4 goals per game. He is also first in steals with 2.7 per game and exclusions with 2.7 per game, while he is fifth in assists, with four per game.

Canada lost to Team USA on Sunday after winning the first two games against Japan and China.

Fabien Lavoie is the team's leader in scoring with 9.3 goals per game, while Say Luangkhamedeng averages 3.7 assists per game.

Japan vs. Germany (Fifth place playoff)

Japan placed third in Group A after losing to Canada and the US team and winning on over China.

Shimakawa Shinichi sits third in tournament scoring, with 14 goals per game, while Fujishima Shingo averages 9.7 goals, 0.7 steals and 2.3 exclusions per game.

Germany placed fourth in group B, now winless after three matches against Australia, Great Britain and New Zealand.

Four German players - Maik Baumann, Joerg Holzem, Oliver Johannes Picht and Wolfgang Mayer - are within the ten players with the most turnovers per game, as Germany is the second worst team with 12.7 turnovers per game.

Japan beat Germany 44-38 when the two teams played the playoff match for fifth place at the 2008 Canada Cup.

New Zealand vs. China (Fifth place playoff)

New Zealand obtained its first win over Germany on Sunday, after losing by a one-goal margin to both Great Britain and Australia.

Daniel Buckingham leads the team in scoring with 13.3 goals per game (fourth in the tournament).

China lost badly all of its three group A matches against the USA, Canada and Japan in the team's first Paralympic experience.

Chen Jun leads the tournament in assists, averaging 14 per game. Han Guifei has 9.7 goals per match.
