A massive Anti-Rightist Movement (1957-1959) was initiated by the then leader Mao Zedong during the Hundred Flowers Campaign. More than 550,000 people in China were labeled as rightists. The re-education through labor system was applied to people who embraced rightist ideology without taking real action. The picture shows workers at the Tianjin Second Cotton Mill reading big-character posters, which were used to voice criticism, protest or propaganda. [Photo/Sina] |
