Editor's note: Hetian in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is famous for its high-quality nephrite jade, which is made up of tremolite. Hetian jade is mined from many places in the area, but mostly found around the Kunlun Mountains. With an increasing market demand for Hetian jade in recent years, business has been prospering and prices consequently have soared sharply. More and more locals are engaged in jade digging and mining, hoping to get a piece of the new-found wealth pie and build up their own family fortune.

Despite the bad environment, many Hetian jade diggers work non-stop in the mining fields. They don't know the jades they dig out can be sold to businessmen at a price dozens or even hundreds of times higher than that in their own hands.
