On Aug.1, 2010 at the 34th World Heritage Conference held in Brasilia, capital of Brazil, UNESCO inscribed several of the most renowned sites across Dengfeng onto its World Heritage List under the title of Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in "The Center of Heaven and Earth".
"The Center of Heaven and Earth" refers to the world view of the ancient Chinese people that Dengfeng was located in the center of heaven and earth. Dengfeng area was then granted with certain devotional, political and cultural value.
Based on this belief and accumulated with various political, religious and scientific elements for several thousand years, a building group which is now called historical monuments has gradually grown to the present shape.
The Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in "The Center of Heaven and Earth" contain 11 historical monuments in 8 different places including: Sun Shadow Measurement Tower of Lord Zhou, Dengfeng Astronomical Observatory, Songyue Temple Pagoda, Historical Gates of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Songyang Academy of Classical Learning, Zhongyue Temple, Architectural Complex of Shaolin Temple (Pagoda Forest, Chuzu Temple, Kernel Compound ). These historical monuments have gone through dynasties of Han, Wei, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing to leave behind a physical and visible architectural history of 2000 years in the central plains.
