The 454-meter main section of Guangzhou's new TV tower was completed on August 27 after 26 months of construction work.

The landmark building was erected overlooking the Pearl River which flows through the capital city of southern China's Guangdong Province.

When its 156-meter mast is added, the building will reach a total height of 610 meters, making it the world's highest TV tower.

The tower is designed to withstand an 8-magnitude earthquake and a 12-magnitude hurricane and is expected to be in service for at least one hundred years.

An amusement facility called the Abyss, or Turbo Drop, is to be installed on the 454 meter high platform. The ride will lift people to a breathtaking 500 meters in a few seconds, giving unparalleled views of the city.
