Introduction

Nine Inch Nails' founder and visionary is Trent Reznor- a one man music industry who writes, plays and produces all of NIN's material. He is such an influential figure in the world of music that in 1995 Time Magazine named him one of the 25 most influential Americans. After 20 years, multiple number one albums, 7 Grammy nominations (2 wins), tens of millions of records sold, and being named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the world's 100 greatest artists of all time, NIN continues to remain relevant as ever in 2007 by releasing one of their most challenging albums to date- the universally lauded Year Zero - and headlining festivals and playing to sold out stadiums around the world. But all these accolades are just a cursory glance as to what NIN is truly about.

Nine Inch Nails brought industrial music to the mainstream by combining a wall of sound mix of harmonic noise using computers and guitars in a way that was previously unheard of and combining this with tales of alienation and angst that found a wide audience in the late 80's and early 90's. Albums like Pretty Hate Machine and Broken were sonically groundbreaking material that managed to be brutal but still retain commercial appeal at the same time. However, it wasn't until 1994's The Downward Spiral that NIN truly achieved world wide acclaim. Still recognized as one of the pivotal albums of the 90's and a regular occupant of critics' top 100 album lists, Spiral remains one of the most uncompromising and intense listening experiences ever put to tape. Buoyed by the success of hit singles Closer (which was accompanied by the groundbreaking David Fincher video) and Hurt (the painful ballad of despair memorably covered by Johnny Cash just before his death), Spiral brought NIN much success and thrust Trent Reznor into the realm of music luminaries. He went on to produce the unique soundtracks to Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers and David Lynch's Lost Highway while also releasing groundbreaking music to accompany video games such as Doom. 1999 saw the release of Reznor's most personal LP, and first Billboard No.1 album, to date- the 2 disc The Fragile. Hailed as a masterpiece upon release, this album represented a difficult period in Reznor's life but is a personal favourite among many NIN fans.

The past 2 years have been among Reznor's most prolific. First in 2005 saw the release of the No.1 Billboard album With Teeth featuring Dave Grohl on drums and spawning the massively successful single The Hand That Feeds. This year, NIN are touring in support of their latest album Year Zero which featured a wholly original promo campaign that involved Reznor "leaving" USB drives with new NIN material in bathroom stalls of concert venues. NIN come to China at the top of their game. The band comprises of Jeordie White (ex-Marilyn Manson) and Josh Freeze (the 'Miles Davis of drummers'). They are one of the world's great live experiences and boast one of the most passionate fanbases in rock. They are also known to have a large and devoted following among the local Chinese.
