Goran Pandev earned a penalty and then scored the winner to rally Lazio to a 2-1 extra-time win over 10-man AC Milan and a spot in the Italian Cup quarterfinals yesterday.

After Andriy Shevchenko put Milan ahead, Pandev drew a penalty that Mauro Zarate converted in the 87th. Then the Macedonia striker pounded in from close range two minutes into the first extra period.

Milan midfielder Emerson picked up his second yellow card in the 66th but the Rossoneri took the lead in the 77th as Shevchenko broke out of his scoring slump.

The Ukrainian faked out a defender and managed to get off an accurate shot while falling down from beyond the area. Shevchenko's only other goal this season came against FC Zurich in the UEFA Cup two months ago.

With half his roster injured, Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti lined up Kaka behind Ronaldinho and Shevchenko in attack.

Ronaldinho set up Shevchenko in the 19th but he waited too long to get his shot off, and it was blocked by Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Leaving the season's revelation Zarate on the bench at the start, Lazio began with Pandev and Tommaso Rocchi in front, but it was midfielder Aleksander Kolarov who threatened early with a series of free kicks stopped by Milan goalkeeper Dida.

Zarate replaced Rocchi in the 73rd and Shevchenko exited for 21-year-old midfielder Mathias Cardacio in the 85th.

Milan just missed equalizing when Ronaldinho hit the post with a free kick in the 95th.

In the quarterfinals, Lazio will face either Fiorentina or Torino, who play in two weeks.

Sampdoria, Udinese and Napoli have also reached the quarterfinals.
