Albert Costa named as Spain's Davis Cup captain

Albert Costa was named as the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team for the 2009 tournament on Thursday.

Costa replaces Emilio Sanchez Vicario, who led the Spanish to triumph in the 2008 edition.

Spain defeated Argentina in the final in November to clinch the team event for tennis for the third time in the history of the competition.

Costa, who won 12 titles in his career, including the 2002 French Open at Roland Garros, retired from competitive tennis two seasons ago.

His new job begins of January 19, when he will be following his players at the Australian Open, before naming his first team two weeks later. Spain's first match as they attempt to retain their title, begins on March 6.

"I am very emotional because of the project I have been handed and I am grateful for the confidence that has been placed in me. I hope I can live up to the level, although I know it will not be easy as Emilio has left a difficult legacy to follow," Costa told TVE.
