World number one Dinara Safina surrendered to Aravane Rezai of France 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the WTA Rogers Cup in Toronto on Wednesday.

The Russian had an error-strewn match where she committed 17 double faults. She was broken three straight times in the third set.

Chinese ace Zheng Jie dumped another seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark as she booked the 7-5, 6-3 win over the eighth seed.

Also out were ninth-seeded Victoria Azarenka to Kim Clijsters 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, and No. 12 Flavia Pennetta to Virginie Razzano of France 6-3, 6-1.

Maria Sharapova also made 17 double faults but managed to get past Austria's Sybille Bammer 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Fourth seed Elena Dementieva eased past Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-3, 6-2 and No. 5 Jelena Jankovic topped Switzerland's Patty Schnyder 7-5, 6-4. No. 7 Vera Zvonareva downed Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-3.

In other action, No. 14 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland routed Agnes Szavay of Hungary 6-1, 6-1, Alisa Kleybanova of Russia edged No. 16 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (4), Shahar Peer of Israel bested Francesca Schiavone of Italy 7-6 (2), 6-4, and Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko cruised past Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-3, 6-0.
