Asian champion Wu Peng missed a spot on the podium of the men's 200m backstroke final when teenager swimmer Zhang Fenglin took an overwhelming lead to claim gold in Jinan on Thursday at the National Games.

Zhang, silver medalist of the 2009 National Championships, chalked up 1:58.17 to comfortably beat second-placed Cheng Feiyi in 2:01.25. The bronze medal went to Xie Jiale from China's Shandong province in 2:01.90.

Wu, silver medalist of the 2007 Worlds and fourth-placed at Beijing Olympics, sat out of the podium as he finished fourth in 2:02.08 in the final, nearly four seconds behind the winner.

Despite his authority in the men's 200m butterfly two days before, Wu stood only seventh overall after the preliminary and semifinal, out of the total eight swimmers for the final.
