Under the terms of the deal, which runs from 2010 to 2012, the Ordos city government will pay the Chinese women hockey team 448 thousand dollars annually. In return, "Ordos" will be printed on uniforms of Chinese hockey teams to boost the city's image.

Wang Fengshan, deputy mayor of Ordos said the city has been investing increasing amounts on culture and sport in recent years, adding that a top-flight hockey training base is currently under construction in Ordos.

Recent years have seen a significant improvement in the standard of Chinese hockey. The Chinese women's hockey team made a breakthrough in 2008 when it won a silver medal at the Beijing Olympic Games.

"It is the first time in China's history that a city government has sponsored a national team. This is a big boost to the preparations of the Chinese women's hockey team for the London Olympic Games in 2012," said Lei Jun, chairman of the Chinese Hockey Association.

"Hopefully, Chinese hockey will benefit from this deal and develop even faster in future," Lei added.
