Estevam Soares was fired from his post as the head coach of the Botafogo soccer team on Monday.
The news comes as a shock due to the fact that the team's administration declared that the coach would remain onboard even after their 6-0 humiliating defeat to Vasco da Gama on Sunday.
The Botafogo administration decided to clean house, firing the team's assistant coach, Gerson Sodre along with the team's physical trainer, Lino Fachini.
Soares replaced Ney Franco as Botafogo's head coach during the middle of the 2009 Brazilian Championship. He led the team into 30 games, culminating a somber record of 11 wins, 8 draws and 11 losses.
When Soares was able to keep the team in the first division of the Brazilian Championship, Botafogo's administration declared that they would stick with him in 2010. However, the embarrassing loss to Vasco da Gama caused the directors of the club to take back their words with the purpose of making an immediate adjustment in order to avoid another humiliation.
Botafogo is now looking for someone to fill the shoes of Soares. As for now, one of the team's assistant coaches, Jair Ventura, will lead the team into Wednesday's fourth round match of the Rio de Janeiro state championship against Tigres.
