Wayne Rooney scored two headers to help Manchester United to win 3-0 over West Ham on Tuesday and trim Chelsea's Premier League lead to only one point.

Rooney was back to his best at Old Trafford and almost made a hat-trick on Tuesday but stopped by the crossbar.

The England striker has now made it 11 goals in eight league and cup games, 19 in his last 20 and 27 for the season.

Michael Owen added the third within seconds of entering the game as a late substitute and United now has 60 points from 28 games, one fewer than Chelsea which has a game in hand. Third placer Arsenal has 55 points from 27 games.

After a slow start, United went ahead in the 38th minute when Rooney headed home from Antonio Valencia's cross.

He almost made it 2-0 three minutes later with an improvised turn and volley that flicked the crossbar.

Rooney headed home again in the 55th from Valencia's cross after the winger had been released by Dimitar Berbatov.

Owen went on in the 80th minute and took a pass from Paul Scholes to run clear and add the third, leaving West Ham still just four points above the relegation zone.
