Bayern Munich midfielder Arjen Robben netted the winner in a rough match at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Munich on Wednesday to jockey for a good position in UEFA Champions League semifinals.

The return match will be played in Lyon in a week.

Munich started highly motivated while Lyon handed over control from the start.

The host team worked out several opportunities during the first half but was unable to open the scoring.

Furthermore Munich midfielder Franck Ribery was sent off with a straight red card after a crucial foul against Lyon striker Lisandro Lopez.

With beginning of the second half shorthanded Bayern started where they left off and pressed Lyon into defence.

At the 54th minute Lyon midfielder Jeremy Toulalan booked his second yellow card to discharge his team from superior number.

Munich kept it bowling and was rewarded for their offensively-minded soccer.

At the 69th minute, Robben dribbled 25 meters and netted the decider in cooperation with youngster striker Thomas Mueller who deflected the ball unsaveable for Lyon goalie Hugo Lloris.

Munich then killed the clock with their usual aplomb to take an advantage into next week's second leg in Lyon.
