The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) was considering putting up an international boxing school for Africa at the newly-opened Olympic Youth Development Center (OYDC) in Zambia, the Times of Zambia reported on Friday.

If the program succeeds, Zambia will be the second country on the African continent to have a boxing school after the one in Tunisia, Times said.

Zambia Amateur Boxing Federation (ZABF) president Stephen Simpemba said that AIBA had pledged to send all the necessary equipment to Zambia to ensure the center had the modern equipment, adding that some of the equipment was already in stansit and that AIBDA would also send an expatriate coach to the center to work with local coaches.

According to Simpemba, AIBA president, Ching-Kuo Wu, who was in the country this week, asked the ZABF to send a needs report to him so that theglobal amateur boxing body, could supply all the required equipment.

He said the setting up of an international school would be a big boost for Zambian amateur boxing.

The international school in Tunisia produced Zambian boxers Hastings Bwalya and Kennedy Kanyanta, who went on to strike gold at the 2007 All Africa Games and 2002 Commonwealth Games, respectively, Times said.
