American Tyson Gay took victory in the men's 100 meters race at the IAAF Diamond League London Grand Prix with the world's best result this year on Friday.

Gay dominated the show with 9.78 seconds at Crystal Palace when archrivals Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt were both absent from the event.

"I wasn't expecting to go that fast in these conditions, but I knew I was in good shape," said Gay who was unchallenged in the last race on Friday on the rain-rinsed track.

A heavy shower stormed the competition earlier and the temperatures dropped with time past by. But nothing could discourage the 2007 world champion from running marvellously. When he dashed to the finish line first in 9.78 seconds, the 28-year-old sliced 0.04 seconds off the world best this year.

World record holder Bolt and his Jamaican compatriot Powell shared the previous world leading time this year in 9.82 seconds.

Powell pulled out of the race because of a back injury while world and Olympic champion Bolt had ended his season because of a back injury, which he claimed causing his defeat at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting.

During the clash last Friday, Bolt crashed to his first defeat in two years as Gay won the race in 9.84 seconds to edge down Bolt, who was second in 9.97 seconds.
