Netball skipper Sharelle McMahon has been named as the Australian team's flag-bearer for Sunday's opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi of India, Australia's media reported on Saturday.
According to ABC News, it is the 33-year-old's fourth Commonwealth Games campaign, having won the Diamonds to gold medals in 1998 in Kuala Lumpur of Malaysia, and 2002 in Manchester of England, as well as silver at the 2006 Games in Melbourne of Australia.
McMahon has also led her country to gold at the 2007 World Netball Championships in Auckland of New Zealand, and has earned 107 Test caps for Australia.
Chef-de-mission Steve Moneghetti made the announcement on Friday at a ceremony at the Australian High Commission.
McMahon said it was a "huge shock" to receive the honor.
"I don't know how I felt. My heart started to race and that was about it. I guess shock and after the shock wore off just really proud," McMahon told ABC News.
"On an individual note, obviously carrying the flag will be a huge honor and then hopefully throughout our competition we'll be able to achieve something with this group."
Moneghetti said McMahon was the first netball team player to carry the flag.
"The qualities (of a flag bearer are) success, longevity and leadership and most importantly leadership," he said.
"And Sharelle has shown those traits and been a fantastic leader for the Australian netball team."
