China showed its prowess in weightlifting as Chinese lifters swept all the 12 gold medals contested on the first day of the Asian weightlifting championships on Wednesday.

Chinese lifters won the four categories at ease, with Wu Jingbiao, Zhang Jie, Tian Yuan and Li Ping crowned in men's 56kg, 62kg, women's 48kg and 53kg respectively.

Wu, the newly crowned world champion, clinched the gold medals in the 56kg by snatching 130kg, jerking 158kg for a combined 288kg, 33kg more than the silver medalist Askari Majid of Iran.

However, Chinese coach Chen Wenbin was not satisfied with Wu's performance as Wu failed three out of six attempts.

"Wu could have performed better, he could lift at least 7kg more in total," said Chen.

World record holder Zhang took sweet revenge on Kim Un Guk of DPR Korea to win the men's 62kg competition. Kim had defeated Zhang at last year's world championships.

The 24-year-old Zhang snatched 147kg, jerked 170kg to finish 11kg ahead of Kim.

In women's competition, Chinese strongwomen were also invincible.

Teenager Tian Yuan, who broke three youth world records last year, won the women's 48kg division with a considerable margin of 22kg from second-placed Wen Shih-ping of Chinese Taipei.

Though Li's total result was 15kg fewer than her mark at last year's Guangzhou Asian Games, the world record holder was in a class of her own. She secured the gold by snatching 90kg, jerking 125kg and totalling 215kg.

"My performance today was horrible, I don't know why. I lack excitement because there was no strong opponent," said Li, who failed three out of six lifts.
