Wuhan to host 2012 Thomas Cup, Uber Cup

The 2012 Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup, the world badminton team events, will be held in central China's Wuhan city, announced Kang Young Joong, president of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), in Qingdao, Shandong Province, Friday.

Both Jakarta of Indonesia and Wuhan made a bid for hosting the events, and BWF Chose Wuhan in considering its excellent preparations and the desire of prompting badminton in the city and China, said Paisan Rangsikitpho, vice president of BWF.

Zhang Jin, deputy director of the Sports Administration of Hubei Province, whose capital is Wuhan, said it was great honor for Wuhan and Hubei Province that BWF decided to host the 2012 Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup there. Rangsikitpho said the events will be held in May of 2012, and the last day of the opening would be May 26.

Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, World Men's and Women's Badminton Team Championships, are two of BWF's top three team events and take place every two years.

China has won Thomas Cup for eight times and Uber Cup six times in a row.
