The torch for the 2012 London Olympics has been revealed, a golden aluminum tube featuring a lace-like mesh with 8,000 holes that represent the number of bearers and how many miles it will travel in the 70-day relay across Britain.
The torch stands 800mm high and weighs 800g. The triangular form was inspired by the three Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship; the three words that make the Olympic motto - faster, higher, stronger; the fact the UK has hosted the Olympic Games three times - in 1908, 1948 and 2012; the vision for the London 2012 Olympic Games to combine three strands of work - sport, education and culture.
The flame is set to arrive from Greece on May 18, 2012. It will be used to light the cauldron at the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium on July 27, 2012.
The 70-day Olympic torch relay will take the Olympic flame on an 8,000 mile journey across the UK next summer, from the start point at Land's End on 19 May 2012 until it arrives at the Olympic stadium on 27 July 2012.
