Novak Djokovic's first Wimbledon crown was greeted by celebrations on the streets of Serbia on Sunday.

Hundreds of cheerful mostly young people filled the center of the capital, Belgrade, chanting Djokovic's nickname "Nole" as dozens of cars waving Serbian flags drove around downtown honking their horns.

Similar scenes were reported by public television channel RTS from other Serbian towns, including Novi Sad, Nis, Kragujevac and Kraljevo.

"Novak is our national hero! He is the first Serb to reach the world top in tennis. It feels so good," Jelena Milanovic, a 25-year teacher, said as she gatherd with friends to a Belgrade's central square.

"We are so proud of him. Thanks to him it is nice to be a Serb today," her friend Predrag Dukic said, joining hundreds of people at the Republic Square who earlier had followed events at SW19 in one of Belgrade's cafes.

"We should vote 'Nole' for president," said a smiling girl in her 20s.
