Rouliqiu, a modern derivative of taiqi, originated in China in 1991. It was invented by Bai Rong, an associate professor at a medical school in northern China's Shanxi Province.

Since its invention in 1991, it has been widely enjoyed by sports lovers at home and abroad.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao showed the visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel how to play rouliqiu on May 22, 2006.

At present, it has aroused the interest of people from many countries. Rouliqiu organizations have sprouted up in Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Switzerland and Mexico.
