Myanmar to hold traditional martial arts competitions in Yangon

Myanmar Thaing Federation will hold traditional martial arts competitions at the Aung San Stadium on Saturday, the federation told Xinhua Friday.

Organized by Ministry of Sports, the week-long competitions will run from Saturday to next Saturday under the titles of 9th Myanmar National Sports Committee President's Cup 2011 and 14th Region and State Competition.

A total of 13 teams aged between 16 and 35 from across the nation will take part in the contest and players will perform with the wonderful styles of fighting at the opening ceremony.

The competition includes four categories -- Pencak Silat Attack, which is the South East Asian martial art, one-sword, two-sword fighting and demonstrations.

Meanwhile, Myanmar Thaing Federation has been conducting training for Myanmar Thaing martial arts players in Yangon in preparation for the coming 26th SEA Games scheduled for November in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Male and female athletes have been under training since May last year and they are being coached thrice a day.

Altogether 24 players are expected to compete in two kinds of contest -- Pencak Silat and fighting demonstration in the 26th SEA Games and the main opponents of Myanmar are the teams from Vietnam and Indonesia.

Martial arts was introduced in Myanmar 2000 years ago.
