Philippine boxers are gearing up for two major international competitions this year.
The women's squad will be seeing action first in the 2012 Asian Women's Boxing Championships to be held between March 16 and 26 in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. The Man's team will take part in the Asian Men's Boxing Championships slated for April 1-8 in Astana, Kazakhstan, the Manila Times reported on Tuesday.
Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Josie Gabuco and Alice Kate Aparri will banner the country's campaign in the Asian Women Championships which is expected to draw more than 200 boxers from 40 countries and regions.
"We gave them a few weeks of vacation but after the holiday season, we're expecting them to return and begin our training for these international competitions," said national coach Roel Velasco.
The Asian Men's Championships is a qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympic Games in Lundon.
Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson said they will be sending five boxers led by Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist and Southeast Asian Games bronze winner Rey Saludar.
