Serbia became European champions in men's waterpolo by defeating fellow Balkan state Montenegro 9-8 in the final on Sunday in Eindhoven.

The Serbians were 3-4 behind after the first two quarters, but took command in the third 3-1. They claimed their second European title after their victory in 2006. In 2001 and 2003 the team had won under the name of Yugoslavia.

The women's championship went to Italy on Saturday after they beat Greece 13-10 in the final. Italy took a 4-1 lead after a convincing first quarter and did not give away its advantage in the remainder of the match.

Hungary captured a bronze medal with a narrow win over Russia (9-8). On Sunday the Hungarian men beat Italy 12-9 and finished third.
