Brazil legend Zico has backed clubless striker Adriano to resurrect his troubled career at Flamengo.

Adriano underwent medical tests by Flamengo doctors in Rio last week amid reports the 30-year-old was ready to rejoin his former club.

Zico, who scored 52 goals in 72 international matches for Brazil from 1976 to 1988, says the former Inter Milan and Roma forward deserved another chance after being sacked by Corinthians earlier this month.

"As a Flamengo fan I'm hoping he can do it. Everybody deserves a second chance in life," Zico talked to Globoesporte.

"Adriano is a crucial player. I've already said that he is the only player capable of winning the World Cup for Brazil by himself. But I have seen many players who have had difficulties recovering from Achilles problems."

Adriano was dismissed by Corinthians after reportedly failing to commit to a strict training schedule designed to reduce his weight.

Zico also had words of support for former FIFA world player of the year Ronaldinho, who has been booed by Flamengo fans in recent matches.

"Flamengo supporters have always been that way. I was also booed at the beginning of my career. The fans want commitment and fight from their players," added Zico.

Zico, head coach of the Iraqi national team, added he would not run as a candidate in a possible challenge to oust Flamengo president Patricia Amorim.
