15-year-old American Katie Ledecky has stormed to gold in the women's 800 meter freestyle.

The young swimmer silenced the home crowd with an amazing performance. She won in 8 minutes 14 point six three seconds, just half a second outside the world record. Spain's Mireia Belmonte, who came second in the 200 meter butterfly, added another silver to her collection.

Britain's Rebecca Adlington, who was a huge favorite to win gold for the host nation, was forced to settle for a second bronze. It was a huge disappointment for the crowd as Adlington finished more than five and a half seconds behind the winner.
