Olympic champion Sun Yang won the men's 200-meter freestyle with a world fastest time of the year at the Chinese National Swimming Championships on Wednesday.
Sun, runner-up in the event at the London Olympic Games, established the lead after the first 50m and touched the wall in one minute and 44.99 seconds, the fastest time so far this year. Sun took the silver in the 200m free in 1:44.93 in London where the gold was taken by French Yannick Agnel in 1:43.14.
"I know a lot of people hope I can make a breakthough in 200m free, but I just take it as a practice since I didn't train enough recently," said Sun. "I will train harder after the championships, even harder than what I did before the Olympic Games to improve the result."
"Since I have not been under systematic training for more than two months, I am satisfied with the time," Sun said.
Sun's Zhejiang teammate Wang Shun finished second in 1:46.60, while Hebei swimmer Hao Yun took third in 1:48.43.
After finding a new girlfriend since returning from the London Olympics, the balance couldn't be reached between Sun's personal life and swimming career. The relationship between the multiple Olympic medallist and his coach Zhu Zhigen had been in a tension earlier this year as Zhu thought Sun's love life had affected his training. However, Sun returned to his normal training life in March and it seemed he has smoothed the rift between him and Zhu.
"I hope I can compete against Agnel at the Olympics so I will keep training hard," he said.
The 400m, 1,500m freestyle and 4x100m free relay champion at the London Games also expressed his confidence towards the National Games in September.
"I believe I can win the 200m, 400m and 1,500m at the National Games," he said. "There won't be any problem."
In the women's 100m backstroke final, Zhejiang 17-year-old Fu Yuanhui outclassed world champion Zhao Jing to win the gold in 59.56, which was her personal best. Zhao, represents Hubei, took second in 1:00.28, while Wang Xueer from Guangdong Ticai placed third in 1:00.37.
"I improved my time, and I am so happy about it," said Fu.
Also Wednesday, Tianjin girl Pang Wenxian beat two close rivals Xu Danlu and Li Xuanxu to win the 1,500m free in 16:06.10. Xu and Li placed second and third respectively.
The men's 100m backstroke title was claimed by He Jianbin from Guangdong in 53.97, while the women's 100m breaststoke gold went to Shanghai girl Sun Ye in 1:07.90.
Olympic double champion Ye Shiwen reached the 200m freestyle final in 1:58.88, which ranked third in her group.
"My form is bad today," said the 200m and 400m medley Olympic champion. "But I think I will do better tomorrow."
