"I just got sick during the night, and it is really hard to leave this beautiful race already," said Ji Cheng. "It was my goal to support John to a stage win and to finish this race. So I am very disappointed that I can't reach the second part of my goal."
Ji Cheng was born on July 15, 1987 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. As a child, he took part in track and field before switching to road and track cycling. In 2007, Ji’s provincial track and field team sent him to Holland to join the Shinamo intercontinental cycling team, enabling him to take his first steps in professional cycling.
In 2012, Ji became the first Chinese cyclist to finish the Spanish Vuelta, placing 175th.
The 25-year-old Argos-Shimano rider helped teammate John Degenkolb win Wednesday's fifth stage.
