Unseeded Tommy Sugiarto gave the home crowd something to cheer yesterday by surprisingly beating tournament second seed Chen Long of China in the second round of the Indonesia Open in Jakarta.

Sugiarto, who had never beaten Chen in their previous six encounters, secured a pre-quarterfinal berth with a 40-minute demolition job, winning 21-11, 21-18.
Tommy, the son of former Indonesian great Icuk Sugiarto, said after the match: "I tried to perform the best I could. I had never beaten him before. I knew that he is one of the top Chinese players. So I tried to be patient, avoiding errors and not taking pressure. I did not pay attention to the score until I realized that I had almost won."
He will next take on Wong Wing Ki of China's Hong Kong.
Another Indonesian, fourth-seeded Sonny Dwi Kuncoro, was taken the distance by China's Chen Yuekun before winning 21-17, 10-21, 21-19.
Earlier, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia also struggled, losing a close first game, but managed to hold off unseeded Chinese Wang Zhengming 20-22, 21-4, 22-20.
The 30-year-old Lee admitted he had not performed well, saying that he was still adapting his body condition with the super series tournament.
"Chen Long, Du Pengyu, Wang Zhengming are strong players. I will play better in the next round," the four-time champion said.
It was not all bleak for China, however, as Du, seeded No. 3, advanced with a 21-19, 21-15 victory over Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh.
In women's doubles, top-ranked Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang of China easily defeated unseeded Japanese Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao 21-15, 21-10 in 30 minutes.
Compatriots, eighth-seeded Bao Yixin/Cheng Shu and Ma Jin/Tang Jinhua also advanced.
