Nearly a thousand fans attended the event, and the situation became out of control shortly after the football star's arrival, causing 6 people to be injured in the stampede.

Later on the same day, the football star apologized on his Sina Weibo page for the accident, saying: "I have had an incredible response from everyone at Shanghai Tongji University today, sorry I couldn't get out on the pitch to see the teams, it was impossible to get through the massive crowds. I heard there were a few injuries, I hope the fans are okay and I wish them a speed recovery."

After the stampede, the university sent the injured parties to the hospital and revealed their conditions on its official Weibo page. Officials from the Chinese Football Association, the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau and the University also paid visits to the victims at the hospital Thursday.
