In a swift move to quell rising fans' anger, the China Football Association has shown the door to national soccer head coach Jose Antonio Camacho following an embarrassing 1-5 defeat to Thailand in a friendly last week, Sina.com reported yesterday, without citing sources.
The former Spanish and Real Madrid head coach is said to have accepted his dismissal while compensation details are being worked out.
Camacho took over from Gao Hongbo in August 2011, signing a three-year contract for a reported annual salary of US$8 million.
China's poor performances during the World Cup and AFC Cup qualifiers intensified the pressure on the CFA, which reached its head when the team surrendered abjectly to Thailand. Scores of fans took to the internet calling for the head of the deeply unpopular coach.
Under the 58-year-old Spaniard's reign, China slipped to its lowest FIFA rankings, slumping to 109th in the world in March this year.
The country won a mere seven games from 20, with Camacho at the helm, losing 11 and drawing the other two.
