Emre Can leaves treble winner Bayern Munich to join league rivals Bayer Leverkusen for four years, both clubs announced on Friday.
Can signed a contract dated until June 2017, nonetheless Bayern Munich secured a buy back option for their home-grown talent. The Under 21 German international played one season for the first team to score one goal in four matches. However, he never made the break through into the starting team.
"Emre Can is one of the biggest German talents. We allowed him this move to gain more match practice. We have done this already with Toni Kroos at Leverkusen, Philipp Lahm at Stuttgart and David Alaba at Hoffenheim," Bayern's CEO Karl Heinz Rummenigge said in an official statement.
Leverkusen's CEO Wolfgang Holzhaeuser told the clubs official homepage: "Emre Can is one of the biggest German talents on the midfielder position. I am convinced that he will help us decisively."
Rudi Voeller, director of sport, added: "Emre Can is a versatile player with great potential".
Both clubs agreed to maintain silence over further contract details. The 19-year-old midfielder receives jersey number 10 at Leverkusen and will be officially presented on Sunday.
"Bayer Leverkusen is one of the top teams in the Bundesliga and on top of that, they play in the UEFA Champions League. I want to make my contributions to help the club in all competitions," Leverkusen new arrival Can said.
