In a rematch of last year's final, China's Li Na came out on top again, beating Angelique Kerber 6-4 6-4 to secure a last 8 place at the Western & Southern Open.

Li was scheduled to face Agnieszka Radwanska Friday in the quarterfinals, but the No. 4 seed withdrew from the tournament to attend her grandfather's funeral. That put Li through to the semifinals.

The first set started at a high pace as both players managed to hold on to their respective serves in the first eight games. The fifth-seeded Li won the 9th game to go up 5-4 before breaking Kerber's serve to take it 6-4.

The second set played out in a much different way as both players dropped their serve twice in the first nine games. Li broke the German's serve for the third time when she led 5-4 to nail down the victory.
