World anti-doping agency WADA has revoked the license of the testing laboratory earmarked for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

In a statement released on Tuesday, WADA declared the facility had not met international standards.

"The (laboratory) will no longer be authorized to carry out the testing of doping control samples on behalf of WADA or any testing authority," the statement said.

WADA had initially suspended the facility from operating on August 8 before ruling it be shut entirely. No further details were given for the decision.

The laboratory has 21 days to lodge an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and can even reapply for accreditation.
