Defending champion Liang Wenchong fired an incredible 8-under 64 at the Nanshan China Masters yesterday to power to the top of the leaderboard.

The Chinese star joined compatriot Zhang Xinjun and New Zealander Gareth Paddison on 6-under overall after the second round of the US$1 million OneAsia event.

Major winners Charl Schwartzel and Darren Clarke remained within touching distance of the leaders. Northern Ireland's Clarke, who finished on par on the first day, was at 4 under.

South African Schwartzel finished the day on par and 1-under for the tournament in east China's Shandong Province.

Liang started with an eagle and added 10 birdies during a Nanshan masterclass that required just 22 putts. "I was putting very well, but my driving was also really good today," he said.
