Guangzhou Evergrande became the biggest winner of the annual gala of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Tuesday after grabbing some of the most heavy-weight awards of the year 2013 in Asian football.
Chinese national team and Guangzhou Evergrande captain Zheng Zhi won the AFC Player of the Year award, defeating South Korea's footballer Ha Dae Sung from FC Seoul as well as Iran and Esteghlal ace Javad Nekonam.
Zheng became the first Chinese player to win this accolade since Fan Zhiyi claimed Asian football’s highest individual accolade in 2001.
The 33-year-old midfielder, who was nominated for the second consecutive year, said winning the award was like a childhood dream comes true.
"Winning the award at this age, I am extremely excited," he said.
"This season has been fantastic season not only for me but the whole team mates. We are looking for the unique treble after winning the ACL and the league so it’s been a memorable one."
Guangzhou Evergrande was awarded the club of the year while Zheng's teammate, Brazilian striker Murique, was named the Asian Foreign Player of the year.
Meanwhile, Chinese Football Association surprised many Chinese fans by winning the fair play association and the AFC member association of the year (Inspiring Category).
