Wang Meng was still on the national team's list of athletes for the Sochi Winter Olympics even though she had ankle surgery last week, authorities said yesterday.

Four-time gold medalist Wang Meng left Shanghai Huashan Hospital on Wednesday after surgery on her right ankle on January 16.

She took a high-speed train to Beijing on Wednesday and will be admitted to the sports hospital affiliated to the General Sports Administration.

China does not need to submit its final list of athletes competing in Sochi until February 5.

The Winter Sport Management Center of the General Sports Administration will hold a press conference next week regarding Wang, who will most likely miss the Games, which start on February 7.

The national speedskating team has already expressed its determination to do well despite the likely absence of their star skater.

China will send more than 130 athletes, coaches and officials to Sochi, Russia.

The team is expected to pick up medals in freestyle skiing, speedskating, figure skating and curling.
