Lin made to fight for Asian title

Unseeded former world No. 1 Lin Dan was taken over an hour to win the men's singles at the badminton Asia Championships in Gimcheon, South Korea on Sunday, while his compatroit Wang Shixian beaten to miss the women's singles title.

Lin, a five-time world champion, outlasted world No. 23 Japanese Sho Sasaki 14-21, 21-9, 21-15 in 66 minutes, with the current No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia missing from the Asia Championships.

It was just Lin's second win of 2014 in as many appearances. The long-time layoff shuttler had seen his world ranking fall outside the top 100 before he won his season debut at China Masters earlier this month

Asian Games champion Wang Shixian, however, lost to local favorite Sung Ji-Hyun in straight sets, 21-19, 21-15.

The hosts also collected a title and two silvers in the doubles as Shin Baek-Cheol and Yoo Yeon-Seong edged out Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen of China in the men's doubles final, the second-seeded Kim Ha-Na and Jung Kyung-Eun were edged by the unseeded Luo Ying and Lou Yu of China in the women's doubles final, and Shin and Jang Ye-Na were denied a mixed title by Lee Chun Hei and Chau Hoi Wah of Hong Kong, China.
