On his way to recovery Thiago Alcantara suffered a new injury in his right knee, Bayern Munich confirmed in an official statement on Thursday.

Bayern' s midfielder Thiago Alcantara suffered a heavy injury setback as the Spaniard contract a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee during a training session.

As a consequence he will not take part at the German Cup final this weekend against Borussia Dortmund. In addition, he will not make it to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil although he was part of Vincente del Bosque's provisional World Cup squad.

"That is a bitter pill for Thiago. You can' t help feeling sorry for him. He has been working on his comeback and his shape for the upcoming World Cup in his father' s homeland but suddenly both dreams burst. We will take great care for him and try to do everything so that he can start fit into the season 2014/2015", Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

The 23-year-old midfielder suffered his first knee injury at the end of March against Hoffenheim. Bayern's medical unit predicted an eight week break. However, the Spaniard returned to the training sessions this week to suffer the next injury blow out of nowhere.

According to the official statement Thiago Alcantara will soon undergo a surgery.
