Spain coach Vicente dl Bosque has spoken of his sadness at seeing Spain crash out of the World Cup in the group stage of their title defense.

"There are things that make me want to cry," admitted the coach in an interview with Spanish newspaper ABC.

"I am a sportsman and nothing hurts more than defeat. We would all have like to have continued, this is a World Cup and it is an extraordinary competition," he said.

Spain crashed out of the World Cup after suffering a 5-1 humiliation against the Netherlands and a 2-0 defeat to Chile which made their 3-0 victory against Australia in the final group match irrelevant.

The coach came in for criticism for keeping faith in a squad of players which has grown old together and in the case of some of the younger players, such as Jordi Alba and Diego Costa, who were not in their best physical condition after injury.

"You have to accept the criticism because our first two games were bad and we didn't give the necessary level. We were not at our best, but we also have to give some merit to Holland and Chile, who were better and we have to admit that," he said.

Del Bosque led Spain to the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship title, but he is now being questioned after the failure in Brazil with some (perhaps unfairly) calling him for him to resign.

The Spanish Football Federation have no other candidates for the position, but Del Bosque was unwell to say whether he would leave his post.

"We will see and we will speak," he said. "I want to be relaxed at home. I will speak to the President of the Federation and the General Secretary. I have commented many times that we all want the best for Spanish football," he concluded.
