Italy's Vincenzo Nibali wins Tour de France

 Vincenzo Nibali won the Tour de France.

Vincenzo Nibali of Italy won the Tour de France on Sunday, becoming the first Italian in 16 years to win the race.

Jean-Christophe Peraud was second with fellow Frenchman Thibaut Pinot third.

German sprinter Marcel Kittel won the final stage on the Champs Elysees in Paris.

Nibali, 29, who called himself "a flag-bearer of anti-doping" during the race, finished in a bunch behind Kittel.

The pre-race favorties the 2013 champion Chris Froome and two-time winner Alberto Contador both crashed out with injuries in the Tour.

Nibali won four stages of the Tour. The Italian wore the yellow jersey for all but two stages since Stage 1.
