Xi meets UN chief before YOG opening

China's President Xi Jinping met with Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon in Nanjing on Aug. 16, on the sidelines of the Second Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) which are being held in the city.

Ban expressed his gratitude to China for its strong partnership with the United Nations, including China's contribution to the UN's work in promoting peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.

The UN chief recognized China's effort in addressing pressing global issues, such as the situations in Ukraine, Iraq, Syria and Israel. The two leaders also exchanged views on other issues including the Ebola outbreak in Africa.

Ban suggested that China play a bigger role on issues of climate change and shaping the future development agenda.

Ban and Xi will both attend the opening ceremony of the YOG on Saturday evening. Xi is to announce the opening of the Games.
