Shinji Kagawa's time with Manchester United has come to an end after Borussia Dortmund signed their former player on a four-year deal.

Dortmund completed the returning of Japan international Shinji Kagawa, the "BVB" announced in an official statement on Sunday.

After two sub-standard years at Manchester United, where the offensive midfielder scored six goals in only 38 appearances, Dortmund took action and resigned Kagawa, who will stay with the "BVB" until June 2018 as he put pen to paper on a four-year deal.

"Shinji Kagawa is a technically gifted and creative player who can determine the pace of an encounter. He wanted to return to Dortmund and we will give him the time he needs so that he can reach his high level after two years of sporadic appearances," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told the clubs official homepage.

The Japanese international played already from 2010 until 2012 for Dortmund. During this two-year spell the midfielder scored 21 goals in 49 appearances. After winning the Bundesliga in 2011 he and the "BVB" defended the title the following season to wrap the German domestic double.

However, after two successful years in Germany the 25-year-old returnee chanced his luck at Manchester United, where he never became the key player he was in Dortmund.

"To play in the Premier League was a dream for me. Now I am just happy to be back in Dortmund, with this great team, environment and these unique fans. The BVB is like a family and I am proud that I belong to this family again," Kagawa said.
