Wolfsburg crushed 10-men Leverkusen 4-1 thanks to the brace by Ricardo Rodriguez, to close the fourth round of Bundesliga on Sunday.

The "Wolves" earned their first win of the season as Rodriguez scored twice to ensure Leverkusen's first loss at the fourth game. Leverkusen failed thus to jump on top of the Bundesliga standings.

Leverkusen caught a miserable start into the game as defender Giulio Donati was sent off for a foul play to Wolfsburg's Junior Malanda, inside the box, with only seven minutes into the encounter. Swiss international Ricardo Rodriguez stepped up and converted the penalty into the top left corner to break the deadlock for the hosts.

Leverkusen wobbled but they were able to flabbergast Wolfsburg with the equalizer through Josip Drmic, who shrugged off one defender to slot home from central position in the 29th minute.

Wolfsburg were obviously stunned by Leverkusen's surprising leveller. However, the "Wolves" took the reins again just before the break when Vieirinha headed home a pinpoint cross by Rodriguez.

After the restart Wolfsburg dictated the pace but lacked in accuracy as Vieirinha and Malandapulled wide. Rodriguez cut a better figure in front of Wolfsburg's goal as the Swiss international wrapped up his brace with a volley shot following a corner at the 63rd minute.

Leverkusen were unable to put up some resistance as Wolfsburg were not done with the scoring. Aaron Hunt rounded off the 4-1 win with his first goal for Wolfsburg at the 81st minute.

"This was a very difficult game for us but after the early red card and the deficit it was even more complicated for us," Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt said.

Elsewhere, newly promoted Cologne and Monchengladbach shared the spoils at the Rhineland derby following a goalless draw after ninety minutes.

"We wanted to win. We had more ball possession but we lacked in pace and penetration," Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre said.
