Nemanja Matić is congratulated by Cesc Fàbregas after opening the scoring.

Chelsea beat Sporting 1-0 on Tuesday at the Alvalade stadium in Lisbon, to go top of Champions League Group G.

Nemanja Matic scored in the 34th minute, headeing Fabrega's free-kick to the back of the net, looping over goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Chelsea almost took the lead in the second minute through Brazilian attacker Diego Costa but his effort was saved by goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Andre Schurrle wasted several chances and was very close to scoring in the 15th minute after a pass by Oscar, but Rui Patricio made yet another save.

Though Sporting improved in the second half, it was Chelsea which dominated throughout the match.

Chelsea gained three points, now sitting two points clear of second place at top of the table, and would have scored more goals if it wasn't for the opposition's brilliant goalkeeper.
