Cypriot Champion Apoel got its first point of this year's Champions League by drawing with Ajax 1-1 in Nicosia on Tuesday.

Ajax made their full strength to attack and took the first goal by Lucas Andersen in the 28th minute.

Two minutes later, Apoel earned a penalty, and Gustavo Manduca tied the score at 1-1.

The Brazilian's penalty goal earns the hosts their first point of the group stage. Ajax wasted too many chances.

The coach of Apoel, Giorgos Donis is satisfied how his players were active in the game but in the same time not fully satisfied with the lost chances and with the result in total. After previous game' s result with Barcelona when Apoel lost with only 1-0 gave a hope that Apoel could still make it. Even now chances are still on the side of Apoel to stay in UEFA CUP.

In three weeks, Ajax will travel to the Camp Nou to take on Barcelona while Apoel remain hosts for the arrival of Paris Saint German.

Apoel surprised many in the 2012 entering the quarterfinal of the Champions League. The Cypriot champion is considered longshots to repeat that with players that many of them were on the team during their magical journey a few short years ago.
