Nico Rosberg capitalised on his pole position to beat team-mate Lewis Hamilton to the top of the podium at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Nico Rosberg made good the tradition that the driver who starts on the pole position in the Spanish Grand Prix in the circuit of Montmelo in Barcelona on Sunday.

The man who starts in the lead in Barcelona finishes as winner in 9 out of 10 races and Rosberg was no different.

In a race which didn't have a great deal of drama, the German held off the challenge of his team-mate, the World Championship leader, Lewis Hamilton, who began from second place on the grid.

Hamilton had a poor start to the race and was overtaken by Sebastian Vettel in the first straight, although he soon recovered to overtake Vettel and continue his duel with Rosberg.

The British driver opted to make three stops to change tires during the race while Rosberg took a risk with two pit-stops and that left him with work to do in the closing stages.

Rosberg was forced to finish the race on old tyres and that saw Hamilton pressure, but he was unable to take the win.

The dominance of Mercedes continues in the Formula One season although Vettel's third place also confirms that Ferrari will be their main rival this season, if 'rival' is the correct word.

Meanwhile there was disappointment once again for Spain's Fernando Alonso, whose disastrous season with Honda continued as he was forced to withdraw from the race due to problems with the brakes on his car.

Spanish fans did have something to cheer however, as Carlos Sainz finished in ninth place to take nine World Championship points.
